Already inhabited in the Palaeolithic period, the island was briefly occupied by the Greeks before Emperor Augustus made it his private playground and Tiberius retired here in AD 27. Its modern incarnation as a tourist centre dates from the early 20th century.

DAY 14 - SASSI DE MATERA +

Breakfast at your hotel.

Full day to yourself to explore the famous Sassi of Matera.

Fodor’s described Matera as the only place in the world where people lived in the same houses as their ancestors did some 9000 years ago. This is truly a city lost in time. The homes are known as Sassi, or houses of stone and were excavated by hand into the side of the gorge, one built one on top of the other and connected by an elaborate system of staircases and alleyways. From a distance, it looks like a beehive of caves! Keeping in mind that Matera is a very dry place, the ancient inhabitants had a sophisticated water capture system whereby rain water was funneled into homes and main cisterns. It was true community living, people were self-sufficient, and their animals lived in the sassi with them to help generate heat a well as protect them. It was explained the sad history of this city as the government condemned it in 1952 and evacuated all the inhabitants due to sanitation and health reasons. As a result the city became a ghost town and was left to ruin.

DAY 15 - ALBEROBELLO +

Breakfast at your hotel.

Departure for Alberobello. Enjoy a lunch in a Trulli and afternoon dedicated to the free visit of the city.

Alberobello, the hotbed of the Trulli. Trulli can only be described as magical fairy tale-like structures with stone walls and conical rooves. Declared a UNESCO site in 1996, Trulli can be found elsewhere in Puglia but Alberobello boasts the largest concentration of them with some 400 within its confines. Upon arrival you may think you are on the set of Snow White and the 7 Dwarves! These crazy structures were initially built to be temporary as they were homes built on feudal land. Any home on feudal land was subject to taxation so when the inhabitants caught wind that an inspector was on the way, they were able to quickly deconstruct the Trulli into a pile of rubble as they were built drywall style (without mortar). Some Trulli date back as far as 1350, however most were built in the 15th century.

DAY 16 - ASSISI +

Breakfast at your hotel.

Depart for Assisi with a stop in the area of Pescara (Time permitting).

DAY 17 - DISCOVER Assisi +

Breakfast at your hotel.

Full day guided tour of the town of Assisi.

As if cupped in celestial hands, with the plains spreading picturesquely below and Monte Subasio rearing steep and wooded above, the mere sight of Assisi in the rosy glow of dusk is enough to send pilgrims' souls spiraling to heaven. It is at this hour, when the pitter-patter of day tripper footsteps have faded and the town is shrouded in saintly silence, that the true spirit of St Francis of Assisi, born here in 1181, can be felt most keenly. Though certainly at its heart a religious destination, Assisi's striking beauty and pristinely preserved medieval centro storico and UNESCO-listed Franciscan structures are a fabled haven that will compel and electrify visitors of any nature.

DAY 18 - PERUGIA +

Breakfast at your hotel.

Depart for Perugia, the famous city of chocolate.

Lifted by a hill above a valley patterned with fields, where the River Tiber runs swift and clear, Perugia is Umbria's petite and immediately likeable capital. Its centro storico (historic centre) rises in a helter-skelter of cobbled alleys, arched stairways and piazzas framed by magnificent palazzi (mansions). History seeps through every shadowy corner of these streets and an aimless wander through them can feel like time travel. Back in the 21st century, Perugia is a party-loving, pleasure-seeking university city, with students pepping up the nightlife and filling cafe terraces. The hopping summer event line-up includes one of Europe's best jazz festivals.

DAY 19 - PISA +

Breakfast at the hotel.

Depart for Pisa with a stop in the famous gold-city of Arezzo.

Time at leisure in the town, followed by a departure for Pisa.

Afternoon at your leisure.

DAY 20 - DISCOVER PISA +

Breakfast at the hotel.

Full day guided tour of the city of Pisa.

Pisa is a city in Italy's Tuscany region best known for its iconic Leaning Tower. Already tilting when it was completed in 1372, the 56m white-marble cylinder is the bell tower of the Romanesque, striped-marble cathedral that rises next to it in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Also in the piazza is the Baptistery, whose renowned acoustics are demonstrated by amateur singers daily, and the Caposanto Monumentale cemetery.

EXPERIENCE

We've been providing high quality tours and custom packages to Italy for over 15 years.

Panoramic view of the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine, Rome.jpeg

Savour Our Difference

In cities like Rome and Florence, we select premium hotels located in the historical core. In Venice, we prefer for our guests to stay on the island of Venice surrounded by the laguna and canals, as opposed to in Mestre – an inland suburb of Venice. In smaller towns and villages, our selected hotels are located in the town/village itself, allowing you to become fully immersed in the local culture and visit a preferred café or shop during leisure time.

Your privately guided sightseeing tours are fully customizable to suit your preferences and needs.

We don’t want you to feel rushed and therefore, in each city you will have time to absorb the local culture on your own. Whether you want to sit at a café and watch people go by or indulge in some local shopping, it’s totally up to you!

In the final travel package, Antonio will suggest his favourite restaurants and typical wine that you may want to consider at each destination.
